History
Huancayo is known for the contrasts in the city, its dances, its
food, its colors and its culture.Huancayo The name Huancayo comes from 2 words from
the quechua language: “Wanka” = stone, “Yuq” =
the one who possesses. This means that the name of the city translates into “The
place of the stone”. This theory is accompanied by a traditional saying about the
present park “Huamanmarca” (that's where the town hall, the hotel, the post office
and the regional government are). As the saying goes, in the beginning when the
town developed, there was a big oval-shaped stone. The word Huancayo was included
in the Spanish lexicon of the 16th century. Pre-hispanic period: Formerly, the zone
was inhabited by the indigenous Wanka people, who were renowned for being hardened
and indomitable warriors. Their main activity was agriculture. The Wankas were not
looking to expand their territory. To the contrary, they focused on the Mantaro
Valley to be developed. In 1460, under the command of the Inca Pachacutec, the Incas
took control over the region and annexed it to their empire. On 1st of June 1572,
Huancayo was founded as an “Indio town” by Don Jeronimo de Silva and dedicated to
the “Holy Trinity”.On 8th November 1580, the construction of the “Holy Trinity of
Huamanmarca” chapel was started (as a replacement of the rock which served as a
Adoratorio) During the period of independence, Huancayo proclaimed national independence
on 20th November 1820. After obtaining independence, the provisional governor Jose
de Torre Tagle gave Huancayo the official title of a city. On 19th march 1822, this
title has been ratified by the provisional government of Jose de La Mar.
